What started as a kitchen renovation for this Victorian semi-detached house in Godalming quickly grew into something bigger. Our clients wanted a space that truly connected to their garden, and the rear of the property.
While the street frontage has all the beautiful Victorian character you'd expect, the back had suffered through various additions so was up for some renovation. With an additional bedroom added to the brief we designed a two-storey extension that ties in the Victorian red brick of the existing fabric yet brings a more contemporary feel to the rear elevation.
The design gives our clients a generous kitchen that flows seamlessly into the garden, an additional bedroom upstairs, and a much-needed thermal upgrade to the existing building fabric.
Being semi-detached, we needed to be considerate of the adjoining property and its rights to light, which led to the angled form of the ground floor extension – a practical solution that also creates interesting geometry and better garden access.
Beyond the extension, the rest of the house is getting a complete retrofit to improve thermal efficiency. This includes insulating the existing timber suspended floors and upgrading all the original sash windows to double glazing – maintaining their character while dramatically improving performance.
Planning has just been submitted, and we're hoping to start on site in spring 2026.
