Extension and full remodelling of a family bungalow
This project transforms a modest existing bungalow into a spacious, light-filled home deeply connected to its surrounding garden. Paul and Deborah, both passionate gardeners, wanted every space in the house to open up to and engage with the landscape. The entire layout was reconfigured to orient living spaces towards the rear garden, while a new wing was added to provide a comfortable self-contained area for Deborah’s mother.
Two new extensions were introduced to form a courtyard at the heart of the home — a sheltered, year-round garden space that brings daylight deep into the plan and offers a quiet place to sit and enjoy nature.
As a self-build project, the design was developed with simplicity and sustainability in mind. Paul had already installed solar panels and a heat pump, and he was committed to keeping the new work as environmentally responsible as possible. The two wings of the house were designed to be built in phases, allowing Paul and his son to construct the home themselves over time, with each section independently functional.
Completion is expected in October 2025.
